There were a number of thrillers in Round 2 of the Squash ACT Premier Squash Spring 2016 Competition held at the Northside Fitness Centre in Dickson. The competition, co-sponsored by Sean Rogers of Luton Properties, was fierce and players are really getting into the swing of things.
Line 1

The match of the round turned out to be Peter Nuttall (SCSC) v Hayden Ross (DSC). Peter started off strongly, stamping his authority early, winning the first game 11-3. Hayden regathered his thoughts, winning the 2nd game 13-11. Both players exchanged games throughout, with Peter eventually winning 3 games to 2. The final scores was 11-3, 11-13, 11-6,9-11, 11-6.

In the other two matches in Round 2, Charan Walia (SCSC) defeated Adam Gauntlet (VSC) 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 while Corey Bedingfield (SCSC) defeated Finian Kennedy (DSC) 11-9, 11-7, 11-6.

Line 2

The anticipated match up between young gun Graham McKay and the more experienced Leigh Bishop lived up to all expectations. Both players provided an excellent spectacle throughout the best of 5 format. Leigh knew he was in for a tough  , removing the tracksuit pants after loosing the first game 11-7. He bounced back, taking the second game 11-8. The next 2 games were shared and at 2 games all, the fifth certainly didn’t disappoint. Long, tough rallies continued, with Graham eventually getting on top. The final score was 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6.

Greg Rebetzke (QSC) filled in this week for Corey Markham (QSC) and came up against yours truly, Sean Rogers. Over the years, we have had some good battles, with this match once again going to 5 games. Greg’s short game turned out to be too much for me in the end, with Greg winning 3 games to 2. The final score was 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 12-14, 11-6.

In the third match in Line 2, Alex Lock (SCSC) defeated Ben Phillips (DSC) 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9.

Line 3

All three matches this week were very close, with all players putting on a great standard of squash. Match of the round goes to James Rusk (QSC) and Lachy Watt (SCSC). This match seemed to go forever, with only 6 points separating them after the 5th game. James eventually came out on top but Lachy certainly pushed him all the way. The final score was 10-12, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7.

Dirk Phillips (SCSC) and Zac Morris (SCSC) also battled it out over 5 games. Dirk started off well, winning the first 2 games reasonably comfortably, however Zac fought back well, winning the next 2 games with young gun Zac eventually winning in the 5th 8-11, 5-11, 11-2, 11-4, 11-3.
